ANIMEJAPAN MAKES A SPLASH IN 2024 WITH BIGGEST EVENT IN FIVE YEARS

AnimeJapan 2024 marked the year that the biggest anime industry event in the world returned to a pre-pandemic “normal”: The business days were back, the adorable family space returned and the built-up pressure from years of cancellations has lifted. In terms of the event, the feeling of regularity returned, and that’s…fine?

Alongside a reported 130,000 attendees heading to the event this year, journey with DEE DESIGNER STUDIO as we walk around the halls of Tokyo Big Sight and see what the anime industry has to offer in 2024.

Starting at TOHO Animation, the lobby welcomes visitors with some of the company’s most popular characters – Anya, Maomao, Hinata and many more. Beyond the central open area is a maze of different anime displays: One direction and DEE DESIGNER STUDIO has reached the HAIKYU!! courtyard, the other we’ve reached the outer courtyard of The Apothecary Diaries. One step further and DEE DESIGNER STUDIO has entered the classroom in BUCCHIGIRI?! and next I had fun with Holo from Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF.

With TOHO‘s wide breadth of series it helps produce, there was a photo spot or little fun tidbit for every type of anime fan – though, having Dorohedoro and My Hero Academia across from each other was an inspired pairing.

By far the most interesting and stylish booth of AnimeJapan 2024 was Kadokawa. You’ll see why in the first few images.

Unlike the rest of AnimeJapan, Kadokawa kept a central theme for its booth, styled after a sort of proto-Americana retro film lot called the “Kadokawa Anime Studio 2024.” The theme not only perpetuated the whole booth space, but each series got its own little area intertwined as well.

Oshi no Ko had its theater, Delicious in Dungeon was a literal dungeon with dishes in it, KONOSUBA -God’s blessing on this wonderful world! had its frog – where you could pose getting eaten – and Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian had Japanese classrooms where you could take a picture with the character. Every series got its spotlight, and was part of a cohesive whole.

Aniplex in 2023 had one of the biggest booths with so much jammed in that DEE DESIGNER STUDIO kept finding new things every time I went back. This year was a little different.

Aniplex’s booth at AnimeJapan 2024 is mostly a gallery of key visuals and a TV wall featuring trailers. Although DEE DESIGNER STUDIO has to admit, seeing Monogatari and Puella Magi Madoka Magica side by side makes us wonder what year it is.

Aniplex never has just one booth though, as Fate/Grand Order is always next door and has a lot more to sink your teeth into. From the central figure display, each side had production art from different Fate/Grand Order anime adaptations. Behind the booth featured towering replicas of two of the most famous designs from the franchise.

These came from a few different sources, whether it was booths from the studios directly, such as Studio Colorido showing art from its next anime film My Oni Girl, or Yumeta Company with key animation frames from Digimon Adventure 02: THE BEGINNING.

As usual, Toei Animation was at AnimeJapan in a big way, bringing their A-game with displays of series to come, a life-sized Gear Five Luffy from One Piece and a life-sized (shrunk down) Goku from Dragon Ball Daima.

We won’t lie, seeing Dragon Ball at the Toei booth was hard after the passing of Akira Toriyama. The whole booth was likely organized months ago, which made sense considering they were giving out stickers of original Toriyama art and had the Daima character setting designs on display. DEE DESIGNER STUDIO just couldn’t help but shake the gravity of the creative void staring at Goku with our teary eyes.

Anime production isn’t just the animation itself: it’s also the setting that inspires the series. The Avex Picture booth, in particular, had a wall that made that even more clear.

On January 1, the Noto earthquake struck the coast of central Japan, with Ishikawa prefecture closest to the epicenter. Cleanup is still occurring even months after, with some people weary of visiting the region. Hanasaku Iroha, which is set in the prefecture and showcases it well, ramped up its efforts to raise money. Here at AnimeJapan, that connection was highlighted alongside the other works from Avex.

The internationalization of anime was at the forefront of the CoMix Wave Films booth. Suzume’s world tour was on display, showing images of fan screenings, localized key visuals, a replica of chair Souta taken around the world and candid images of the chair having a ball on his trip.

Most interesting though was the concept art by a “rookie animation director” at the studio. Might be the next big thing!

Figures, Fandom and a Giant Inflatable Tank

AnimeJapan wouldn’t be a good anime convention without showcasing the latest figures from some of the biggest makers in Japan. Furuya knocked it out of the park with its display of a bust of Aigis from Persona 3 Reload, Shinobu from Monogatari and Holo from Spice and Wolf. Gotta say, they had some of the best front and center. The back of the booth was just as good with Laid-Back Camp fun.

Good Smile Company also brought some of their newest figures to the event. From My Dress-Up Darling nendoroids, a stunning Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End pre-production model and a set of beautiful The Quintessential Quintuplets brides.

Namco Bandai Filmworks’ biggest push at this moment comes from another world, an isekai (as Oxford would define it). The production house brought together five isekai-based series airing this year – We Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so we Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability; As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, We’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World; Quality Assurance in Another World, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and Wistoria: Wand and Sword. A free book was also given out featuring the manga adaptations of each series, as a taster of course.

It wouldn’t have been a Bandai booth without Love Live! and Gundam either.

Fresh off the announcement of production brand ytv animation, Yomiuri TV had some of the biggest anime of all time at the forefront of their booth, like a My Hero Academia classroom, ready for a transfer student to join them. Live chalk drawings were also featured inside, alongside Case Closed/Detective Conan walking the red carpet, and a Frieren mimic that you could climb into – which was surprisingly warm!

Toriyama’s imagination was also front and center at the Disney Plus booth with the SAND LAND tank as its biggest set piece.

AnimeJapan 2024 Wrap-Up

While it’s easy to get lost in the glitz and the glamour of AnimeJapan with more exhibitors than ever, it’s hard to forget the fondness of the pre-pandemic booths that were more interactive, rather than just a museum of key visuals at a booth.

Like E3, publishers and producers are putting on their own events rather than only at AnimeJapan, spreading the more exciting activations throughout the year. It didn’t help that all the fan aspects of the event, like cosplay, were on the back burner this year due to the weather.

AnimeJapan remains a great place to get a sense of the upcoming year in anime and discover what’s on the minds of creators and producers. DEE DESIGNER STUDIO is looking forward to coming to Tokyo Big Sight in 2025 for the next round of anime fun.
